Author Harper Lee dies at age 89
Harper Lee, the elusive novelist whose child's-eye view of racial injustice in a small Southern town, "To Kill a Mockingbird," became standard reading for millions of young people and an Oscar-winning film, has died. She was 89. HarperCollins spokeswoman Tina Andreadis confirmed the author's death to The Associated Press on Friday. For most of her life, Lee divided her time between New York City, where she wrote the novel in the 1950s, and her hometown of Monroeville, which inspired the book's ..>> view originalMovie review: Race is doubly powerful story about Jesse Owens
Jesse Owens' triumphant effort at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin represents a noteworthy feat in both sports and world history — a defining moment because of how the track star, in the face of bigotry of international proportions, emerged a champion. The story is told in the film Race, which examines the athletic accomplishments of Owens and the turbulent social and political times in which the events took place, as suggested in the double meaning of the film title. Heading into the 1936 Olympics,..>> view originalJ.T. Barrett, a healthy captain: 5 things you need to know from the ...
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- J.T. Barrett is in his fourth year in Ohio State's football program, has won a national title and finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting, so you'd think he's experienced it all by now. He hasn't. This is his first time going through winter workouts healthy and as the team's unquestionable leader and quarterback. "Man," Barrett said Wednesday, "I didn't think about that until you said it." Second-graders on the Near East Side spent Thursday morning at the Martin Luther King branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, immersed in folk art, local black history and the importance of neighborhoods. But the 7- and 8-year-olds were thinking more about glue and feathers than abstract concepts. "I like it 'cause it's messy," said Savon Jones, 7, of Columbus' Trevitt Elementary School, as he saturated his art paper with glue to attach colored drinking straws at the Columbus Metropolitan ..>> view originalDebate over US Supreme Court vacancy echoes 1968 fight
WASHINGTON — For the first time in nearly half a century, a president is likely to nominate a justice to the U.S. Supreme Court during a presidential-election year, and many analysts believe the result will be the same as it was in 1968: The Senate will just say no. With the death last weekend of Justice Antonin Scalia, President Barack Obama said he plans to “ fulfill my constitutional responsibilities” and select a replacement “in due time.” But with the nation deeply divided during a polariz..>> view originalYost: Ohio Department of Education going easy on cheating principals
Ohio Auditor Dave Yost ridiculed the state Department of Education on Thursday for allowing some Columbus City Schools administrators to take part of the summer off as punishment for data-rigging. "Here's the most important thing you do to make sure this never happens again: You make the people responsible pay," Yost said. "It's about what we want to set as the expectation for people who are being paid by us, the people, to do a particular job." ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (AP) — Pope Francis has suggested women threatened with the Zika virus could use artificial contraception, saying "avoiding pregnancy is not an absolute evil" in light of the global epidemic. The pope unequivocally rejected abortion as a response to the crisis in remarks Wednesday as he flew home after a five-day trip to Mexico. But he drew a parallel to a decision by Pope Paul VI in the 1960s to approve giving nuns in Belgian Congo artificial contraception to prevent pre..>> view originalExecution date set despite Ohio not having lethal drugs
The Ohio Supreme Court on Friday set an execution date for a condemned killer over the objection of two justices who question establishing dates when the state doesn't have any lethal drugs. The court ruled 5-2 to schedule James Frazier's execution for Oct. 17, 2019. He was sentenced to death for the 2004 slaying of a woman in a Toledo apartment building where both lived. The decision means Ohio now has 25 death row inmates with firm execution dates beginning early next year at a time when the ..>> view originalThis Day, February 19, In Jewish History by Mitchell A.
