  • Columbus Foundation, ADAMH seek donations to battle opiate abuse

As the Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Board of Franklin County took new steps this week to fight the still-raging opiate crisis, the Columbus Foundation added support by announcing a first-of-its kind community fundraising effort to aid in the battle. “Unfortunately, the problem has not gotten better, and it’s not going to go away anytime soon,” said David Royer, CEO of the ADAMH board. He and leaders at the Columbus Foundation say the partnership can help hone a comprehensive community strate..

  • The Escape room King of Columbus

The Escape room King of Columbus
To appreciate the mad genius of Marty Parker, you need to experience one of his “shows.” The good news is I’m dead. The bad is I feel a nagging sense of failure. And my shoe is broken, and I’m embarrassingly sweaty. But I’m … happy? Energized? This is a very confusing time in my life. I’ve just done something I swore I would never do: I let someone lock me up with a bunch of strangers for an hour so I could experience one of those trendy escape rooms. This one is called Trapped in a Room with a..

On the 'Rogue One' boycott and the thin white male ego
“Rogue One,” the first in a series of standalone films set in the “Star Wars” universe, hits theaters everywhere this week. I’m sad to report that I haven’t seen it (as it was not screened in advance for Columbus critics). I’m happy to report that I will see it, and with great excitement. So instead, I’ll discuss the movement to boycott the movie that’s spread among alt-right types under the #DumpStarWars hashtag. To be clear, this isn’t so much of a movement as it is a momentary Twitter trend,..

The view from inside the 2016 presidential campaign
My job as a photojournalist has led me to some interesting places. I’ve tiptoed around drug dens covering the heroin epidemic in our region, entered countless homes to document intimate family moments from California to Vermont and, in 2016, often had a front row seat to the presidential election.  I had the opportunity to cover the campaigns of every major candidate multiple times for publications like The New York Times and The Washington Post. Freelancing as a photographer in a swing state l..

College volleyball | Columbus familiar to Minnesota, Nebraska
The NCAA volleyball Final Four has arrived at Nationwide Arena, and at least two teams are in familiar territory. Of the four teams to make the national semifinals — Minnesota, Nebraska, Stanford, Texas — two are in the Big Ten and come to Ohio State at least twice a season. The last time reigning NCAA champion Nebraska — whose Hunter Atherton went to Dublin Coffman — was in town, coach John Cook wanted to see Nationwide, where the semifinals will be played Thursday and the national championshi..

  • Dublin, Columbus to partner on traffic study

Dublin is working together with the city of Columbus to conduct a study on a section of Sawmill Road. Access points along Sawmill Road are "clogging the whole system up," said Jeannie Willis, Dublin's engineering manager of transportation. "We have to figure out how to streamline it," she said. Willis said the impetus for the project was the Sawmill-Snouffer Road intersection. Dublin developers wanted to see the T-intersection converted to a cross-intersection. City officials would need to work..
